Wedding Guest Dress Code in Dubai: What to Wear (and What to Avoid)

Dubai hosts weddings from every culture: Emirati celebrations, Indian weddings that run over several days, Russian and European evenings in hotel ballrooms, and ceremonies on the beach. The invitation and the venue tell you most of what you need to know. This guide covers the rest.

Start with the invitation

  • Black tie or formal: a floor-length gown or an elegant midi in a rich colour.
  • Cocktail: a dressy midi or knee-length dress; a polished mini can work at a modern evening party.
  • Beach or garden: a flowing midi in a lighter colour (not white), with flat or block-heel sandals.
  • No dress code given: ask the couple or a family member. In Dubai, dressy is the safe default.

Five rules for every Dubai wedding

  1. Don't wear white or ivory unless the couple asks for it. It is the bride's colour in most traditions.
  2. Dress up rather than down. Dubai weddings are glamorous, and being underdressed stands out more than being overdressed.
  3. Check how covered you should be. Some families prefer modest outfits, especially for religious ceremonies. A stole or a jacket for the ceremony solves most of it.
  4. Plan for the air-conditioning. Ballrooms are cool and celebrations run long, so a light wrap helps.
  5. Choose shoes you can dance in. Many weddings go on well past midnight.

Emirati and Arab weddings

Celebrations are often separate for women and men, and the women's evening is one of the most glamorous events you can attend: floor-length gowns, rich colours, embellishment and full make-up are the norm. Many guests arrive and leave with an abaya or a coat over their gown. Photos are usually not allowed inside the women's hall, so follow the hosts' lead.

Indian weddings

An Indian wedding in Dubai often runs over several events: mehndi, sangeet, the ceremony and a reception. Colour is welcome: bright pinks, yellows, greens and jewel tones are perfect. Many families see red as the bride's colour, and some avoid black and white at the main ceremony, so keep those for the reception or ask first. Guests from outside the culture are welcome in a bright midi or maxi; for the mehndi or a daytime event, yellow and florals are a joy.

Russian, European and international weddings

Evening weddings call for a cocktail or evening dress: a satin midi, velvet in winter, or a sleek black dress (black is widely accepted at evening receptions in Western traditions). Daytime ceremonies are lighter: a midi in a soft colour. Russian-speaking weddings in Dubai are usually festive and long, with dinner and dancing, so comfort matters as much as glamour.

Beach and garden weddings

Choose lighter fabrics and softer colours (not white), a midi that moves in the breeze, and flat or block-heel sandals that won't sink into sand or grass. Evenings by the sea are breezy between November and March, so bring a wrap.

Engagement parties

Usually a step less formal than the wedding: a cocktail dress or an elegant midi is right. The same courtesy applies, so leave white for the bride-to-be.

What to avoid

  • White, ivory and very pale cream
  • Red at Indian ceremonies, unless the family says otherwise
  • Very revealing cuts at traditional or religious ceremonies
  • Casual daywear, denim and flip-flops
  • New shoes you haven't worn before a long night

Try your options at home

Choosing a wedding-guest dress is easier when you can see two or three side by side. A female fitting assistant can bring a selection to you the same day anywhere in Dubai and wait while you try them on. Delivery is free when you keep at least one piece. Browse our wedding guest dresses.

Questions women often ask

Can I wear black to a wedding in Dubai?

At most Western-style and Russian evening receptions, yes. At Indian ceremonies black is sometimes avoided, so ask the family or choose a bright colour.

What colours should a wedding guest avoid?

White and ivory everywhere, and red at Indian weddings, where it is traditionally the bride's colour.

Is a short dress acceptable for a wedding guest?

For a modern cocktail reception, a polished knee-length or mini dress is fine. For formal, religious or Emirati celebrations, choose a midi or maxi.
